02 October 2026 Highlights of the Week Real Sector
Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI, 2021=100) based headline inflation remained unchanged at 8.0 per cent in September 2026 compared to August 2026. Food and Non-Food inflation recorded 8.7 per cent and 7.7 per cent, respectively. Meanwhile, the CCPI based core inflation increased to 5.4 per cent in September 2026 from 5.1 per cent in August 2026.
In August 2026, Purchasing Managers' Index for Construction Industry, as reflected by the Total Activity Index, expanded on a month-on-month basis.
The Unemployment rate increased to 4.0 per cent in Q2 2026 from 3.8 per cent recorded in Q2 2025.
The Labour Force Participation Rate increased to 50.0 per cent in Q2 2026 from 49.3 per cent recorded in Q2 2025.
Monetary Sector
Weekly Average Weighted Prime Lending Rate (AWPR) for the week ending 02 October 2026 increased by 10 bps to 11.04 per cent c ompared to the previous week.
The Average Weighted Call Money Rate (AWCMR) increased to 8.99 per cent on 02 October 2026 compared to 8.96 per cent at the end of last week.
The reserve money increased compared to the previous week, mainly due to the increase in deposits held by the commercial bank s with the Central Bank.
The total outstanding market liquidity was a surplus of Rs. 360.11 bn by 02 October 2026, compared to a surplus of Rs. 370.92 bn by the end of last week.
By 02 October 2026, the All-Share Price Index (ASPI) decreased by 1.07 per cent to 20,812.64 points and the S&P SL 20 Index decreased by 0.96 per cent to 5,883.50 points, compared to the index values of last week.
Fiscal Sector
During the eight months ending August 2026, government revenue and grants increased by 21.2 per cent to Rs. 4,002.3 bn compared to Rs. 3,301.5 bn in the corresponding period of 2025.
Total expenditure and net lending increased by 6.9 per cent to Rs. 3,966.9 bn during the eight months ending August 2026 compared to Rs. 3,712.5 bn in the corresponding period of 2025.
During the eight months ending August 2026, overall budget balance recorded a surplus of Rs. 35.4 bn compared to a deficit of Rs. 411.0 bn recorded in the corresponding period of 2025.
Outstanding central government debt stood at Rs. 31,278.43 bn at end of June 2026. Accordingly, total outstanding domestic debt amounted to Rs. 18,804.64 bn while the rupee value of total outstanding foreign debt amounted to Rs. 12,473.79 bn.
During the week, Treasury Bill yields remained broadly stable in both primary and secondary markets, while Treasury Bond yields also remained broadly stable in the secondary market.
The rupee value of T-Bills and T-Bonds held by foreign investors increased by approximately 1 per cent in the reporting week compared to the previous week.
In the reporting week, the auction for T-Bills experienced an oversubscription rate of approximately 2.5 times.
The total volume of secondary market transactions in T-Bills and T-Bonds increased by approximately 7.7 per cent in the reporting week compared to the week before.
External Sector
Year to date depreciation of Sri Lanka rupee against the US dollar was 6.2 per cent as of 02 October 2026.
The net absorption based on value date by the CBSL from the domestic foreign exchange market amounted to US dollars 64 mn in September 2026.
The gross official reserves were provisionally estimated at US dollars 6,929 mn as at end August 2026. This includes proceeds from the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) swap arrangement.
The merchandise trade deficit widened to US dollars 7,180 mn during the eight months ending in August 2026, compared to US dollars 4,264 mn recorded in the corresponding period of 2025.
Export earnings increased by 3.3 per cent (year-on-year) to US dollars 9,377 mn, while import expenditure increased by 24.1 per cent (year-on-year) to US dollars 16,557 mn during the eight months ending in August 2026, compared to the corresponding period of 2025.
The terms of trade deteriorated by 4.1 per cent (year-on-year) to 77.3 index points in August 2026, as the increase in import prices exceeded the increase in the export prices.
