Monetary Policy Review - No. 5 of 2026
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has maintained the Overnight Policy Rate (OPR) at 8.75%. This decision was made during the Monetary Policy Board meeting on 29 September 2026, considering both domestic and global economic conditions. The Board noted the effects of prior monetary policy tightening in May 2026 and acknowledged uncertainties from geopolitical tensions and potential risks from El Niño. Domestic economic activity showed resilience, with a real growth rate of 4.7% year-on-year in the first half of 2026. However, headline inflation rose to 8.0% in August 2026, influenced by energy price increases. The Central Bank expects inflation to remain in high single digits through the first quarter of 2027 before easing towards the 5% target. Despite current inflation spikes, medium-term expectations are stable. The external sector showed resilience as well, with the current account recording a surplus in August 2026, aided by reduced imports and improved tourism earnings. Gross Official Reserves increased to US$ 6.9 billion by the end of August 2026, supported by net foreign exchange purchases. The Central Bank remains vigilant and data-driven in its policy approach, ready to adjust measures if inflationary pressures escalate. The next monetary policy review statement is scheduled for 20 November 2026.
