What is APIT?

APITAdvance Personal Income Tax — income tax withheld on employment income stands for Advance Personal Income Tax. It's the tax your employer deducts from your salary each month and sends to the Inland Revenue Department (IRDInland Revenue Department — Sri Lanka's tax authority), computed from the official IRDInland Revenue Department — Sri Lanka's tax authority APITAdvance Personal Income Tax — income tax withheld on employment income Table 01 for the year.

Think of it as "pay as you earn" – instead of paying one large tax bill at year-end, small amounts are taken from each paycheck throughout the year.

How Your Employer Calculates APIT

Your employer applies IRDInland Revenue Department — Sri Lanka's tax authority APITAdvance Personal Income Tax — income tax withheld on employment income Table 01 — a monthly withholding table that has the Rs. 150,000/month relief built into its rows. Employment profits are not reduced by EPFEmployees' Provident Fund — mandatory retirement savings fund for private-sector workers before the table is applied (EPFEmployees' Provident Fund — mandatory retirement savings fund for private-sector workers is a payroll deduction, not a tax deduction). The step-by-step below is the annual-equivalent view of what the table produces.

Step-by-Step Calculation

Step 1: Estimate Annual Income

Your employer takes your current monthly salary and projects it for the full year.

Example: Rs. 200,000/month × 12 = Rs. 2,400,000/year

Step 2: Subtract Personal Relief

The first Rs. 1,800,000 is tax-free (for 2025/2026). The APITAdvance Personal Income Tax — income tax withheld on employment income table builds this in as the Rs. 150,000/month zero-rate band.

Rs. 2,400,000 - Rs. 1,800,000 = Rs. 600,000 taxable

Step 3: Apply Schedule-5 Qualifying Payments (If Submitted)

If you've submitted Form T10 with qualifying payments:

  • Approved charity donations: capped at the lower of the donation, Rs. 75,000, or ⅓ of taxable income
  • Other Schedule-5 items per the IRDInland Revenue Department — Sri Lanka's tax authority return guide

(Life/health insurance and housing-loan interest are not deductions under the Y/A 2025/26 structure.)

Step 4: Calculate Annual Tax

Apply the tax brackets to your taxable income:

SlabAmountRateTax
First Rs. 1,000,000Rs. 600,0006%Rs. 36,000
Total Annual TaxRs. 36,000

Step 5: Divide by 12

Rs. 36,000 ÷ 12 = Rs. 3,000/month — matches the APITAdvance Personal Income Tax — income tax withheld on employment income Table 01 row for a Rs. 200,000 monthly salary (Rs. 50,000 above the 150k band @ 6%).

When APIT Changes

Your monthly APITAdvance Personal Income Tax — income tax withheld on employment income deduction may change throughout the year. Here's why:

Salary Increase

If you get a raise, your employer recalculates APITAdvance Personal Income Tax — income tax withheld on employment income based on the new projected annual income.

Example: Mid-year raise

  • January-June: Rs. 150,000/month → Low APITAdvance Personal Income Tax — income tax withheld on employment income
  • July onwards: Rs. 200,000/month → Higher APITAdvance Personal Income Tax — income tax withheld on employment income

The employer may also "catch up" on under-deducted months.

Bonus Payments

Bonuses are taxed at your marginal rate. Your employer:

  1. Adds the bonus to your annual projection
  2. Calculates total annual tax including bonus
  3. Deducts the extra tax in the bonus month

Result: Your take-home from a bonus may be lower than expected.

Submitting Form T10

When you submit qualifying-payment claims to your employer, they reduce your APITAdvance Personal Income Tax — income tax withheld on employment income going forward where the tables allow.

For someone earning Rs. 250,000/month:

Before Form T10: Rs. 8,000/month APITAdvance Personal Income Tax — income tax withheld on employment income After claiming approved charity QPs: lower monthly APITAdvance Personal Income Tax — income tax withheld on employment income — the employer applies the Schedule-5 caps (lower of the donation, Rs. 75,000, or ⅓ of taxable income)
