Who Is This Guide For?
This guide helps you if you:
- Work remotely for a foreign company
- Are a Sri Lankan living abroad
- Are a foreigner living in Sri Lanka
- Earn income from multiple countries
- Are unsure about your tax obligations
The Big Question: Are You a Tax Resident?
Your tax obligations depend on one key factor: tax residency.
The 183-Day Rule
You are a tax resident of Sri Lanka if you spend 183 days or more in the country during a tax year (April 1 - March 31).
| Days in Sri Lanka | Status | What's Taxed |
|---|---|---|
| 183+ days | Resident | Worldwide income |
| Less than 183 days | Non-Resident | Only Sri Lankan source income |
Important: This is physical presence, not visa status.
Tax Residents: What's Taxable
If you're a tax resident (183+ days), you're taxed on:
✅ Salary from Sri Lankan employers
✅ Salary from foreign employers
✅ Rental income from Sri Lanka
✅ Interest from Sri Lankan banks
✅ Business income (worldwide)
✅ Foreign investment income
Basically: everything, everywhere.
The 2025/2026 Foreign Employment Exemption
Here's the good news for remote workers. In 2025/2026, foreign employment income may be exempt if ALL of these apply:
Three Conditions (All Required)
Work performed OUTSIDE Sri Lanka
- Physical work location was outside the country
- Remote work FROM Sri Lanka doesn't qualify
Paid in foreign currency
- Salary received in USDUS Dollar — the United States dollar, EUREuro — the eurozone currency, GBPBritish Pound — the UK pound sterling, etc.
- Not converted to LKRSri Lankan Rupee — Sri Lanka's currency (Rs.) before payment
Remitted through a licensed bank
- Money brought to Sri Lanka through a bank
- Not via informal channels
Who Qualifies?
| Situation | Exempt? |
|---|---|
| SL citizen working in Dubai, sending money home | ✅ Yes |
| SL citizen working remotely FROM Colombo for US company | ❌ No |
| Foreigner on assignment in Sri Lanka | ❌ No |
| SL citizen visiting home while employed abroad | ✅ Yes (if work was abroad) |
Remote Workers: The Tricky Part
If you're in Sri Lanka working remotely for a foreign company:
- Work location = Sri Lanka (where you physically work)
- The exemption likely does not apply
- You're taxed like any other resident
This is the part many digital nomads miss. Being paid in USDUS Dollar — the United States dollar doesn't automatically mean tax-free.
What You Should Do
- Track your days in Sri Lanka carefully
- If 183+ days, plan to pay tax
- Consider the Expat Tax Calculator to estimate liability
- Consult a tax advisor for complex situations
Non-Residents: What's Taxable
If you spend less than 183 days in Sri Lanka, only Sri Lankan source income is taxed:
✅ Salary for work performed IN Sri Lanka
✅ Rental income from Sri Lankan property
✅ Interest from Sri Lankan banks (WHTWithholding Tax — tax deducted at source before the money reaches you applies)
✅ Dividends from Sri Lankan companies
❌ Foreign salary (not taxed)
❌ Foreign investments (not taxed)
❌ Foreign rental income (not taxed)
Withholding Tax (WHT) for Non-Residents
Even as a non-resident, some taxes are withheld at source:
| Income Type | WHTWithholding Tax — tax deducted at source before the money reaches you Rate |
|---|---|
| Interest | 5% |
| Rent | 10% |
| Dividends | 14% |
| Professional fees | 14% |
These are deducted before you receive payment. Often, this is your final tax.
Do You Need to File a Return?
Tax Residents
You likely need to file if:
- Total income exceeds Rs. 1,800,000
- You have multiple income sources
- You need to claim deductions
- You want to claim the foreign income exemption
Non-Residents

- All income had WHTWithholding Tax — tax deducted at source before the money reaches you deducted
- No additional tax is owed
But file if you want to claim refunds or deductions.

If you paid tax abroad, you may get a credit in Sri Lanka (or vice versa).
